"Solo Sundial" by Sabine Marcelis

Sabine Marcelis' mirrored sundial is a beautiful example of how the right environment can evoke emotions and draw attention to the product at hand. The sundial's unique design and the reflections it creates not only tell time but shape a visually striking, interactive experience. The strategic use of environment is crucial in creating an engaging, memorable message and is a key element of effective communication.

A ring-shaped Spanish villa was transformed into a large-scale installation by Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis for luxury watch label A. Lange & Söhne. Titled [.span-wrapper]“Solo Sundial,”[.span-wrapper] the piece utilized the circular building and an abundance of natural light to create a luminous, reflective timepiece.

Designed by Belgian architects Kersten Geers and David van Severen of Office GDVS, the villa is part of Solo Houses – an ongoing project in the mountainous region of Matarraña,Spain. This architectural endeavor consists of 15 buildings to date, eachdesigned by an emerging international architect.

The 45-metre-wide footprint of the hollow, circular building provided the perfect space for Marcelis’ timepiece, created to celebrate the release of A. Lange & Söhne’s Datograph Up/Down “Lumen.” [.span-wrapper] The concept [.span-wrapper] brings together light, color and form in an explorative sundial by way of a cleverly placed obelisk. Situated in the center of the courtyard, the colored, mirrored-glass obelisk tells the time by casting light of different hues around the space throughout the day.

The sundial, made entirely of acrylic glass, features a sleek, minimalist design that is at once modern and timeless. The sundial is placed on a single acrylic rod, anchored in the ground, around which the sundial rotates.

Sabine Marcelis is a Dutch designer who creates work at the intersection of art, design, and architecture. Her work is about shaping new experiences through the manipulation of light, material, and color.

One of the standout features of “Solo Sundial” is its ability to cast colorful shadows, thanks to the use of acrylic in its construction. As the sun moves across the sky, the sundial casts different colored shadows, adding an element of playfulness and surprise to its design.
